Deliverance....

"Mary of Magdalene, out of whom came seven demons."
Luke 8:2

I've been reading Twelve Extraordinary Women by John Macarthur...(stolen from the Gysen library...Hi Melissa!). I honestly have never read anything on Mary Magdalene before. I must admit, I knew nothing about her, other than the fact she was the first person Jesus spoke to after His resurrection. I was quite shocked when I read that verse, "Out of whom came seven demons."

Macarthur lays out all of the verses on the "symptoms" of a demon-possessed soul during those times. Blindness, deafness, insanity, depression, loneliness, shame, fear, inability to speak, and a HOST of other miseries. Mary Magdalene was afflicted with not one, but SEVEN demons! It was a life of pure misery and agony. Their souls were unable to escape the constant torment of the demons dwelling in them!!

Scripture deliberately leaves out any details of her past. We are told nothing else. Nothing other than this depressing and sad fact. It's all we need to know. Christ delivered her. We are told only as a reminder of Christ's grace. Christ came to her. Demon possessed spirits never came willingly to Christ, He always called them and PULLED them out. Even when the souls physically and violently resisted, He brought them to their knees. She was brought from her pit of darkness into the Light.

No soul has the power to reform his own life. As much as the world deceives you, no sinner can change his own heart...good works don't atone for sin. And this comforts me. Because I know I never would have come to Christ willingly....

"When He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene..."
Mark 16:9
